About

oldcynic

I’m an Episcopal (Anglican) priest on the West coast of Scotland, serving 2 small congregations who work fantastically hard. You can learn more about them here.

Married to Alan, who shares a love of good movies (although he is more Sci-fi than me…), good music and computer games when we have time.

No kids, but dote on nieces and nephews from both sides of the family.

I’m often asked where my theological tradition lies. I hate these kind of labels, but in my earlier church involvement I would have been described as a Charismatic Evangelical, a baptist member of a large Ecumenical Congregation. Some aspects of that tradition I still hold dear, others left me bruised and battered and cynical for a while. As an ordinand, I developed an understanding of higher church traditions, & have broadened & mellowed with experience and time. Now I’m somewhere in the middle, not sitting on the fence gaining splinters, but holding together a finely woven cord which incorporates the colours & textures of traditions both high & low, and one which (i hope and pray) sees the God of love and grace which enabled both sides to come into being. Liberal, evangelical, charismatic, conservative, catholic? I dont know which applies, and care even less. But God loves this world and all the people in it, and showed that love in remarkable and inexplicable ways. This I will do my best to live & preach as long as I am able. With the help of God, I will.
